Johnny Cash may be known best for his “Folsom Prison Blues,” but don’t let that hard exterior fool you. In 1992 he showed his softer side when he appeared on the children’s classic television program, Sesame Street, to sing a song with his new puppet friends.

The scene opens when construction worker “Biff” recognizes Cash and is in awe of his presence. Cash tells Biff he is there to sing “Five Feet High and Rising,” a song he had penned about a flood he witnessed when he was a child.

“When the water would rise from all the excess rain that would fall we would measure the water to make sure we would know when it was unsafe,” the Man in Black explained.

Biff, jumping at the chance to duet with Cash, offers to help by stacking one-foot tall boxes up to measure and explain what five-feet of water would look like.

“We can make it to the road in a homemade boat / That’s the only thing we got left that’ll float / It’s already over all the wheat and the oats / Two feet high and risin’,” Cash sings.

By the end of the sing-along, Biff has a stack of boxes almost twice his height. The two new friends then decide now would be the perfect time to learn how to swim.

Cash isn’t the only country star to perform on the beloved children’s show. Fellow acts, including Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Waylon Jennings have all brought their talent to the famous street to duet with some new friends.
