Remember When Sugarland Was a Trio?
There once was a time where award-winning duo Sugarland was actually a trio. Here's what happened to the third member of the band.
Sugarland is back together and it almost seems as if the world is whole again. But before Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles were an award-winning duo, they were a trio with former member Kristen Hall.
The band formed in 2002 when Bush and Hall started playing music together and eventually invited Nettles to join as the lead-singer. During this time they wrote and recorded their debut album, Twice the Speed of Life, with Hall earning a writing credit on every track. Featured on this album are a number of Sugarland’s classics tunes, including “Baby Girl,” “Something More” and “Just Might (Make Me Believe).”
The band was off to an unprecedented hot start when suddenly in January of 2006 Bush and Nettles issued a statement on their website noting that Hall had “decided that she wants to stay home and write songs, and we support her in that decision.” Immediately after, three became two.
Fast-forward two years later, Hall filed a lawsuit against her former bandmates claiming they owed her money from the debut album’s success in the amount of $1.5 million. During the case, Bush and Nettles claimed that Hall owed them money from liability debt they paid off themselves from the first album and touring that followed.
Eventually, the case was settled in 2010 without the exact details being released.
The duo has been through a lot since then; winning awards, releasing No. 1 singles and even taking a hiatus. But now, the pair is back and better than ever. The recently released their first single since 2011, “Still the Same,” with promise of new music on the way. The duo will launch their much anticipated comeback tour on May 4.
