Maren Morris opens up about getting into the best shape of her life in a cover story for Women’s Health – and truthfully, all it comes down to is dietary moderation, exercise and carving out time to de-stress.

Speaking with the magazine, Morris gives much of the credit for her new physique to personal trainer Erin Oprea – who also trains superstars like Carrie Underwood and Kacey Musgraves. Three times a week she FaceTimes with Oprea for one hour, doing light cardio to warmup, then bodyweight resistance exercises like planks, pushups, squats and lunges, and then lifting free weights to tone her arms at the end.

“Squat lunges are the worst,” Morris explains, saying that she originally told Oprea she wanted to look like Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. “They’re so hard because that’s the area I need it most—my thighs and butt.”

As for her diet, Morris sticks mostly to salads with a protein like skinless chicken for lunch and dinner, and has three egg whites with spinach cooked in olive oil and wheat toast every day for breakfast. But she also says Oprea has taught her not to obsess.

“It isn’t about carb paranoia or deprivation, it’s about moderation and enjoyment in tandem with my hard work,” she writes on Instagram.

In the end, that enjoyment factor is also key, so she carves out stress-relieving time away from music – even right after a show – and likes open up her mind with just-for-fun tarot card readings. It all adds up to feeling healthier than ever before, and that shows up not just in her work, but also in her marriage to fellow country artist Ryan Hurd. One year into their marriage, Morris says that original spark is still there.

“Sometimes you think you know all there is to know about somebody, and then a year happens and you keep surprising each other,” she shares.

Morris recently wrapped the European dates of her headlining GIRL: The World Tour and will soon embark on Miranda Lambert’s highly-anticipated Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour 2019. The journey will begin September 13th and runs through November.
