“I think it just comes down to…we don’t want more than anyone else, we just want the same as everyone else.”

Those powerful words about being a woman in today’s world open the poignant video for Maren Morris’s new single, “Girl.”

The video, directed by Dave Meyers, follows the lives of women from different backgrounds—quite literally. The first half of the clip is shot entirely from behind the women, so their faces are hidden but their experiences play out in the foreground.

As their struggles unfold, Morris sings soulfully about self-confidence, rejection and resurgence. The performance is interrupted during a scene in which a man coaches the normally confident singer on her vocals. As he demands more power, Morris pours herself deeper and deeper into her own song.

The video tackles many facets of life as a woman, and includes some topical, ripped from the headline moments. In one scene a female fast food employee is assaulted across a counter by a man—similar to an incident that took place earlier this month. Morris is also shown marching with other women at a rally, much like those taking place regularly across the country.

Slowly the faces of the women are revealed as they go through a variety of triumphs, tragedies and every day tasks.

Morris, who is shown strumming her guitar alone in a shop and playing a small club in performances pieces throughout the clip, makes strides of her own, eventually playing for what appears to be a sold-out stadium crowd.

The singer ends on an ironic note by commenting, “One of the hard things about being a girl is having to always answer questions about why it’s hard to be a girl.”

Morris will play the track to fans when she heads out on the road for her Girl: The World Tour. Joining the Texas native for the nearly 40 date run will be fellow female country stars Cassadee Pope and RaeLynn. Check out the full list of dates here.
