Brantley Gilbert Shows Softer Side on ‘Man That Hung the Moon’
Gilbert's Kick It In the Ship Cruise returns this November.
Hard rocking country singer Brantley Gilbert shows off a softer side with the new track, “Man That Hung the Moon,” highlighting his new and most important gig as father.
Inspired by the birth of his son Barrett in 2017 and finding out he and wife Amber are now expecting a baby girl (due in September), the tender track is all about the push and pull between wanting to be perfect for your kids — and knowing without a doubt that you’re not.
“There was a time in my life where I’m not necessarily proud of the man I was,” Gilbert explains. “I want our children to have a song where they can hear my voice say ‘I love you’ and acknowledges that there’s going to come a time when they figure out I’m not a ‘super hero.’ I’m human; I’ve made mistakes. And I’ll make a lot more, but there’s a man who really did hang the moon, who’s got your back and always will, and if I’ve done my job as a father, they’ll know that truth.”
Featuring the quiet tone of a parent’s lullaby and sung with unfaltering love, Gilbert says he found out about baby number two and sat down to write a letter to the kids, “but I’m a songwriter first, so I ended up with this song.”

“You’re gonna think I hung the moon / That I made the sky / That the sun rises / And sets inside my eyes; And it won’t be long / ‘Til I hear daddy’s home / And footsteps runnin’ to the man that hung the moon,” goes the heartwarming chorus.
In other news, Gilbert’s Kick It In the Ship Cruise is set to return for 2019. After selling out last year, Gilbert’s second trip will sail from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico, aboard Norwegian Pearl from November 4th-8th. It will feature performances by the star himself, along with Chase Rice, LANCO, Tyler Farr, Danielle Bradbery, Jon Langston, Colt Ford, Brian Davis, SixForty1, Tyler Booth and more. Tickets are available now with rooms beginning at $915 per person, plus taxes and fees. Gilbert’s duet with Lindsay Ell, “What Happens In a Small Town” is inside country radio’s Top 20, and his fifth album is in the works.
